PART ONE: SAUL BELL CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
I had no idea what was in store for me as I contemplated the Saul Bell Challenge last summer…
I just knew it was time for me to create a piece that pushed me to those foreign places far beyond my comfort zone. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.
As I thought back to projects that challenged me the most, the necklace that I received the MJSA Vision award for last year was at the top of the list. The visual design was exacting, and the engineering was elaborate, and I loved doing it because it was so complex. Hmm, it might be time to start another necklace.
Contemplating the necklace, the slate was blank. That seemed odd, as so much of the work I do is custom. Many of my clients come to me for a fresh take on the time honored classics- to both push the envelope, and at the same time have the feel of refined elegance. I love working within the client’s design parameters, and finding that elusive spark that makes their eyes light up.
So back this necklace piece– what would it look like? And who would wear it? Maybe that’s the question to start with.
With a bit more thought, I could almost see the woman who would wear it. She was classic, yet a bit on the adventurous side, and very sure of herself. The necklace would fit her like a second skin, moving gracefully as she turned her head. And heads will definitely turn her way, as she wears this necklace. So what is this necklace she will wear?
Join me on this journey of the design and creation of this special necklace. This blog series is an intimate view into the thoughts behind it, and the challenges overcome. Follow along from inception to the award ceremony, as I design and build this necklace named SURRENDER.
