PART TWO: MY WAY OF DESIGN
My Initial Journey to Design
Have you ever felt drawn to something so strongly that your soul aches for it, as if there were a piece missing?
I grew up the middle child in a family that moved way too many times (a corporate brat as opposed to an army brat) and in trying to make sense of it all, I chose the way of the ultimate peacemaker. The one looking for solutions so hard, where sometimes none existed sometimes, and just kept looking until that magical impossible solution seemed to pop up out of nowhere.
And sometimes the solutions just existed in my mind, and there is where I entered my world of art. I chose to push the boundaries of possibilities and perfection in art, creating my own magic. So, of course it follows that I chose one of the most technically of demanding arts- that of metal and gold and gems.
To me, design and creation is problem solving at its finest and most valid form. There are set parameters, and measurable results with a finished piece that either “works” or it doesn’t. This challenge is what I thrive on, what gets me up in the morning.
My Secret of Design
I’ve found the real secret of design, for me, is just to start it. Not to wait until I am in the right mood, or the moon is in the right phase… just to start it, even if I don’t feel like it. To have an idea and be willing to go with it, not knowing where it will lead. To accept that out of 20+ sketches, only one will be any good. And to push through all that, following the design’s lead, balancing the parameters, to the final design that “works”!
